Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia

Request To Revoke Your PASNAP Authorization Card:

We are Einstein nurses opposed to PASNAP union organizing at our hospital. We are opposed to the union because:

* They charge dues of 1% and can’t guarantee anything.

* They promise things like staffing ratios but have never been able to negotiate them.

* We like the flexibility we have without having to clear any little change through a union.

* PASNAP is too aggressive of a union that likes to take it’s members out on strike.

    Hello!

I’m a nurse in Michigan trying to stop our hospital from unionizing. Just curious, 2 1/2 years later with the union? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

  2. Just a nurse December 21, 2016 at 08:40 #

Update: PASNAP and Einstein reached a tentative agreement last night around midnight. For the first time in 150 years , my colleagues and I will have a voice as a member of PASNAP. Once ratified our contract will include much improved staffing , strong increases in wages, and a much improved out of network healthcare coverage. Most importantly for the first time in many years our nurses have united , and our most significant wins will enable safe and fair assignments to deliver optimal patient care!

    • MKL November 21, 2017 at 14:28 #

My hospital is trying to get the union OUT. I hope PASNAP made good on their promises. And you might want to review their most recent LM-2. No way would I vote to give up money for a union with those financials!!

  3. BossRB March 15, 2016 at 18:24 #

This is but another cloak and dagger move for Nurses not to have a voice! It’s a tool for those who wants to gauge the support the nurses have!

    • Disappointed RN March 17, 2016 at 20:38 #

I can’t understand why paying for a service that has no guaranteed outcome is equal to trying to take away our voice. If I’m going to give up my hard earned money, I want so proof that my investment will be worth it. So far, I’m not seeing it.

I read the article posted by Just a Nurse and a few things stand out to me –

The fact that the nurses were “ecstatic to have this over and done” doesn’t say to me that they were ecstatic with what was negotiated. Then that the process took a long time and a 2 day strike just reinforces how difficult it all was. Not to mention PASNAP agreed to FREEZE the PENSION! How is that value for my dues money???

Wake up people and know what you are getting into…..BUYER BEWARE

      • MKL November 21, 2017 at 14:29 #

Looking over their LM-2s it was a poor choice….

  4. Disappointed RN March 14, 2016 at 19:30 #

I am saddened and disgusted to see my work family talking to each other like this and pitting people against one another. I agree that things need to get better at Einstein. We do need better staffing, reliable equipment and for management to listen to us and take our concerns seriously.

I DO NOT agree that a union can fix any of this. The union isn’t even in yet and things are already worse in the way people are treating each other. I can’t believe it has come to this.

    • Just a nurse March 15, 2016 at 14:16 #

I too am disappointed. In my long tenure at Einstein I never could have imagined that I would be voting to join a union. As for claims that pro Union RN’s are not helping anti Union RN’s, I am just not seeing that to be true. In the unit I work, our priority is our patients regardless of which side we plan to vote.
I just don’t trust that administration will listen, things got better briefly 2 years ago when a union was being talked about. Now things are at an all time worst. Patient care is no longer a priority to administrators , only paperwork and reimbursements ! Our CEO is making millions , while freezing my pension. Something has to change and I want our nurses to have the power to do so Not Management.

      • Disappointed RN March 15, 2016 at 20:01 #

Just a Nurse – I’m glad to hear that you haven’t witnessed the bullying or unwillingness to help RNs who don’t support the union that I have. I have been a nurse for many years and am generally not phased by how some nurses treat/eat their young. I am appalled to see how new RNs or at least those new to Einstein are being pressured by pro-union RNs. These RNs are just trying to learn the ropes but instead are being pressured all shift about joining the union.

Have we forgotten why we became nurses in the first place? I fully support RNs or any employee for that matter making the decision if they want to be represented by a union, but I DO NOT agree with that happening at work when we are supposed to be caring for our patients. From what I have seen in the past few weeks, some RNs are finding plenty of time to go from unit to unit talking about the union and pressuring their co-workers – yet those same RNs are the first to complain that there isn’t enough staff. We can’t have it both ways….

As I said in my first post, things need to improve at Einstein. We need better, or at least more consistent staffing and we shouldn’t have to threaten a union to get it either.

This time, things have gone too far. I cannot be a part of anything that pits us against each other and takes our attention away from our patients or money away from my family. I can’t do it and I will be voting NO if it ever comes to that.

I know that there are others who feel this way and I pray that they begin to speak out and stand up to the unprofessional behavior we are witnessing before it is too late.

        • Just a nurse March 16, 2016 at 06:20 #

I respect your decision to vote no , but I don’t see the one sided harassment you speak of. Personally , my coworkers and I been pulled into a meeting for well over an hour in a critical care unit, to speak to 2 administrators with 2 night nurses covering 14 patients. These meetings were not mandatory but “strongly encouraged” to attend. We were also mandated to attend generic anti Union meetings to “inform” us of our options. Oh wait not “mandated” but you “have to go”. Yes, nurses are talking to other nurses and garnering support for our cause! But I surely haven’t seen any RN forced to sign a union card. This is the only opportunity for many pro Union nurses to inform co workers of their “other” option, to Join a Union!

In my opinion, the pressure in this campaign is far greater from administration shoving a new flyer or 2 down our throats every day!

Money hasn’t even been discussed to this point. However, if you can’t see that we haven’t had a real raise in the past several years , I guess you don’t need the money! I haven’t had more than a 2-3 % raise in many years , yet Our benefits package rises every year , yet our only affordable healthcare option has been limited to good old “Einstein”.Several RNs in my unit are paying out of pocket for health care because our plan doesn’t cover illnesses outside of our network. Disgusted!

Finally, I will gladly pay union dues for a voice at the bargaining table ;to negotiate a Fair contract (not unlike our administrators who portray us as unprofessional because we want one) that include better healthcare, better wages, a real pension !

          • Disappointed RN March 16, 2016 at 10:50 #

I respect your desire to see those issues with healthcare, wages, and retirement addresses. I personally haven’t seen a PASNAP contract where they have negotiated more than 2-3% per year, or addressed the quality of healthcare, or increased pension benefits.

I have a friend who works at Crosier and PASNAP only negotiated 1-1.5% and agreed to freeze their pension. I don’t see how that is worth 1% of my salary in dues or going on strike.

        • Just a nurse March 16, 2016 at 13:55 #

We are being paid $4-5/hr behind Temple. Temple’s matching for their 403 b plan goes up to 8.5% not $400/yr. Chester Crozier caps out at $55-57/hr . Plus some kind of double time bonuses for weekends. We cap out around $50/hr before raises turn into bonuses .They are the figures I found thru my research online, as it is difficult to find contract details in full. We are lagging severely behind the market and caring for the same acuity patient. Since the days of Mary Beth Kingston ( a fantastic administrator and nurse advocate) Einstein has said they strive to pay nursing … Middle of the city’s market. That is no longer acceptable, too many tasks have been added to our jobs. Benefits cost more and help less. That is why I and a strong majority of my co workers ,will vote YES to a Union.

          • Disappointed RN March 17, 2016 at 03:50 #

Do you really think that the union is going to be able to get us a $4-5/hour raise? That just doesn’t even pass the common sense test. I highly doubt that they would be willing to put that in writing.

I know that PASNAP is following this discussion so I will put the question to them directly.

PASNAP – do you guarantee Einstein RN will be paid the same wages as Temple and to match the 403b contributions at the same rate as Temple? Regardless of what is negotiated in the contract?

          • Just a nurse March 17, 2016 at 05:47 #

            http://www.delcotimes.com/article/DC/20150615/NEWS/150619774

Of coarse ,We have to negotiate a contract, there are no guarantees! Absolutely! But we have no guarantees now and certainly aren’t going to accept a contract that doesn’t pay us a fair market rate. Einstein has already frozen our pension several times in my tenure. In addition, they have delayed raises several months at a time . Guess what before you know it a yearly raise is skipped.

With a few exceptions , I believe that I am talking exclusively to administration and union busters , not co workers at Einstein. If you want information and guarantees in writing you will never see that, from either side. That is why we , Einstein nurses will unite, to negotiate in good faith to make improvements in our hospitals, wages, pension and benefits.

Educate yourselves and truly listen to both sides! We know we will hear managements!

For now Disappointed RN and Concerned RN we will have to agree to disagree , see you at the vote.

  5. Concerned Nurse March 12, 2016 at 19:48 #

Please make an informed decision before voting either way, this is your responsibility.
I am a nurse and have worked in union environments in the past. One notable thing about union is that they tend to destroy management/nurse relationship and do not deliver on most of their promises. Nurses are professionals and they are better of negotiating with management than paying someone to do this for them. In addition, please pay attention to the impact of unionization on both steel and auto industries in the country; the outcome was not as expected. Healthcare seems to be their next focus and if care is not taking, the end result could be the same.
You might want to check “the-right-work” or “onevoice-ourvoice” websites to be informed. In addition, whether you agree or disagree, it is your right to vote, so please vote to make you voice heard.
    All the best!

    • Concerned Nurse March 12, 2016 at 20:11 #

Please change the last paragraph to:
“You might want to check “right-to-work” or “onevoice-ourvoice” websites to be informed. In addition, whether you agree or disagree, it is your right to vote, so please vote to make your voice heard.
      All the best!”
      Thanks.

    • Just a nurse March 13, 2016 at 13:24 #

Concerned nurse – I have to disagree. Administration is doing a great job of destroying our “family” all by themselves. To our face they call us the “backbone” of our institution. In Labor board meetings they argue that any nurse could do another nurses job . We all work hard , but we all add expertise to our own specialties . If administration really to repair our family. Stop disrespecting us! Stop trying to force nurses to vote like our CRNA’s that completely want to abstain . Sadly , I have come to the realization that administration doesn’t get it.

      • Concerned Nurse March 16, 2016 at 16:02 #

        Just a nurse,
I understand your point of view but believe me the grass is hardly ever greener on the other side. Based on my past experience, joining the union is not the answer to some of the issues raised. In union contracts, your annual raise is mostly capped at a low percentage irrespective of whether you are a high or low performer. In addition, I am yet to see where patient/nurse ratio is negotiated by union. What will a nurse do if the census is high and there is no help readily available to care for her patients – abandon them? This is definitely against nursing ethics.
That being said, my point is that people should make informed decisions because their decision would have an impact on them and their immediate family not on union members.

        • Just a nurse March 16, 2016 at 21:33 #

This is where I begin to question your validity as an Einstein Nurse. Anyone who has worked in our healthcare system surely knows that Einstein , while calling it “pay for performance” has not given out a higher than average increase for workers in at least 4 years. I am not here to brag , my evaluations have been overall outstanding for at least my last 15 years. Coworkers who are younger and less experienced received the same 2-3% that I have, with an average evaluation. My point is not to show this as unjust, but to prove that we are all getting the same raise regardless of our performance. Let’s not pretend anymore! We ARE being capped at a low rate irrespective of what our NON PEER evaluations state.
While the union contracts at Crozier and Temple do not specify nurse ratios SPECIFICALLY , they do call for charge nurse without an assignment. We don’t have that! They have monthly meetings between management and staff to discuss increasing FTE’s based on increased activity and admissions. And Penn Presbyterian (a non Union) hospital puts out a mass text to their entire staff and per diem RN’s offering $200 bonuses just to cover a short shift.
I have had my share of 3 patient critical care assignments and on my watch no patient will ever be “abandoned” . However if that is Einstein’s New Bar ; I have to question administrations ethics!

        • MKL November 21, 2017 at 14:32 #

Very true. Unions protect lazy workers and do not reward strong performers. I anticipate the quality of care going down.

  6. Speak for Yourself March 9, 2016 at 12:29 #

Fact check everything the union puts out or says!!! Check it like you check your paycheck – I think you will find many inaccurate info – don’t let it slide you wouldn’t if your paycheck was wrong!!!

    • Just a nurse March 13, 2016 at 12:43 #

Are nurses just nurses? Interchangeable parts as portrayed by administration at the National Labor Board meeting on Friday.

Sorry you think my posts are “anti-union,” but PASNAP and the California Nurses Association (CNA) are two peas in the same radical, far left pod. PASNAP will surely force all nurses — members and nonmembers alike — to pay dues and fees to support its agenda, or get them fired. And how much will those dues and initiation fees be? Does anyone know?? $1,000 a year??? $1,200???

And there it is , one union buster out of the closet, thanks concerned nurse who just became concerned citizen!

        • Concerned Nurse March 17, 2016 at 19:34 #

What are you talking about; how did concerned nurse become concerned citizen? Are we becoming so cynical and skeptical to the extent of accusing each other wrongly without union representation? What then would happen when the union comes, this is so sad.
Well for the records, concerned nurse is not concerned citizen.
          Thanks.

          • Just a nurse March 17, 2016 at 20:12 #

This Nurse is done playing your silly games! This will be my last post unless I believe there is really an Einstein Nurse to respond to! I am certain we have a majority , best wishes to all!

      • Frustrated RN March 17, 2016 at 11:29 #

Why is everyone complaining so much about a stinking $30/pay for union dues!?! I was happy that’s ALL it costs. Heck, your benefits would easily be going up by that much next year without some negotiation. I’m ready to vote “YES”

  8. insterested Citizen March 3, 2016 at 15:26 #

I worked at Einstein for over fifteen years, and my spouse has works at Temple for over thirty. I have not vested interest in the outcome…just something to think about. While the union can be aggressive at times, we have benefitted many times in the long run. We always use that health insurance because it was better coverage and cost effective. When our son was very sick, being part of the union gave my spouse a certain sense of job security I did not have. On the flip side, we have also sat through negotiations where they were fighting for something we did not feel strong about, and we lived through strikes and having to make hard decisions for our family. I am not saying one is better than the other, but I do not think it is as simple as it sounds. They do not do anything with our information, etc.

Just wanted to give another perspective. Everyone has to make a decision based on what works for them, but it is not all or nothing like each side says.

Well Sarah, now the Union will be given every Nurses personal contact information since the petition has been filed. and they will begin texting, call and visiting you in person to pressure you to vote for them.

$600 a year is a lot of money to have someone talk for you.

  11. Sarah March 3, 2016 at 08:04 #

I work at Einstein and I’m furious the union has been sending me text messages. I didn’t sign up for those! I’m glad people here are trying to stop this.

    • Frustrated RN March 17, 2016 at 11:35 #

I feel your pain! I have been called and harassed by Einstein management. And then I have to go to work and get forced into their meetings on and off the unit. Horrible. I know they are desperate because they don’t have the majority but enough is enough.

    • Frustrated RN March 17, 2016 at 12:08 #

I am annoyed as well! I have been getting frequent texts and emails from Einstein management. I have also been forced to attend meetings and been put in very uncomfortable “middle of the nurses stations meetings” with upper management. I did not sign up for that! Horrible

      • Just a nurse March 17, 2016 at 17:34 #

Frustrated RN hang in there , hopefully we will get a decision on our vote by Tuesday . Then we can finally let our voice be heard !

Einstein PASNAP supporters is a forum that doesn’t block opposing views unlike the anti union side. They have blocked many Einstein Nurses for simply having a different point of view.

Remember too you have the right to refuse to go to these meetings( per Ric) , I was sucked into one that lasted over an hour. I played catch up the rest of my shift! More than Medicine… At the discretion of management!

  12. Concerned Citizen February 29, 2016 at 12:21 #

    1) PASNAP is a stalking horse for the CALIFORNIA Nurses’ Ass’n, which looks out for number one (itself) first and foremost. 2) Don’t be tricked into supporting the California Nurses Ass’n and its radical leftist political agenda — it’s all about them, their forced dues, and their political power. They cut deals with anyone and everyone when it suits them and their power hungry leadership. 3) If you ever think about supporting them, go back and read nos. 1 and 2 above, and do your homework first. Don’t forget — unions are like roach motels: they make a lot of promises and it is easy to check in, but very difficult to check out.

Dear Sick of Stupid: Perhaps you should do at least a tad of research before you cast aspersions. If you simply go to the CNA/NNOC website http://www.nationalnursesunited.org/site/entry/california-nurses-association
you will find a photo of the CNA President and Bernie Sanders — on the home page — and this written by the CNA President:

“I’m a woman and I will vote for the best feminist for president: Bernie Sanders
I am a feminist. And I would like to one day break the glass ceiling with a progressive woman who sees class and race as fundamental problems in American society. —RoseAnn DeMoro writgin for the Gaurdian, 02/09/16 More »”

Is this what you want our hard earn dues money to go for: CNA/PASNAP’s far left political agenda. ????
