VALLOUREC REMAINS UNION FREE

UE loses 148 to 367

Congratulations to everyone who took the time and put out the effort to be heard, you made a difference.

United Electrical Workers (UE) is organizing and vote dates have been set. It is important that EVERYONE votes. The union has already started a disinformation campaign stating that “if your going to vote no, then just don’t vote”. This is WRONG, every vote counts and it takes just 50% + 1 vote of ONLY THOSE WHO VOTED to decide whether you start paying union dues or not. If 50 people vote and 26 of them voted for the union, ALL of you will pay union dues.

You have the right to:Participate in meetings to discuss NOT joining a union and to attend meetings to discuss YOUR rights not to join a union.
Distribute, read and discuss non-union literature that outlines reasons against participating in union organizing activity.
WEAR buttons, stickers, t-shirts and hats to show support for your right not to join a union and to refrain from union organizing activity.
NOT SIGN a union membership card and you can demand your card be voided if your were mislead into signing a union membership card.
Circulate and sign petitions to oppose the union.
Join together with your coworkers and others in support of your employer and against union organizing activity.
Organize other employees to rally against the union, to demand the union withdraw and cancel the union election.

Using the picture of someone who has been here for 20 years probably isn’t the best choice for a flyer about job security. Good thinking UE. Can’t imagine why people don’t want to put their futures in your hands.

Getting sick of hearing about this Two Tier wage system. The system is in place if you do what is asked you will get your raises accordingly. Earn IT.

Just read the flyer that was in the locker room this morning about “Job Security”. I know I’m new here but I’ve yet to see an hourly person terminated without any justification or reason, so to me its just more union bull shit. You want some real job security how about showing up for work on time and giving it an honest effort!

    • Heat Treat (FQM) January 17, 2014 at 17:44 #

I agree. In fact, I have seen a few employees that should be fire that have not been. Given chance after chance. Don’t see how you could be more secure than you are now!!

I like how the When you talk to the UE reps in person they bash and slander other union an they especially hate on the teamsters lol

Not long after I was hired on, I was laid off for exactly 6 months. During that time Vallourec paid for my health insurance and my Cobra. I have never heard of a company doing that. Due to this unheard of generosity, my family was able to get by. Being a young dad, I cannot afford to come home and tell my family that I am out of work because we are on strike. I work hard for my money and get compensated very fairly. Hard work gets you a long ways. So- please vote NO!!! We haven’t needed a union previously not do we need them now. Our voices are heard so let’s make them loud and clear to the union.

I would like to go to the Union Hall on Monday the 13th at 4:00 pm

I am encouraging people to bring their “coupon” books to get signed, bring questions, High light material you have received and lets show them we are not scarred of there lies and low numbers of supporters

My thought is if they can intrude our homes, why cant we go to theirs?

lets challenge them, I am willing to bet they will not have any proof of what they say they will do for us. Or better yet show us what u have dome for others. Show us what they had before the U E was there then show us what they received after negotiations, If any companies are still around!!!

Well I hope I wont be the only person there.

Again Monday the 13th 4 pm.

you cant miss the Classy location in Girard Just look for Doggie Styles salon and they are right next door. hahahahahahaha

u can turn down Kline there is a parking lot across from the Girard justice center

I started here as a contractor in 1992. In that time I’ve seen this job go from what was once a mediocre job, to a job that now rivals the automakers in terms of popularity and is 2nd to NO ONE in the valley in terms of total earnings. I’ve seen hundreds of people (myself included) build or buy new homes, raise families, buy new cars and toys, and put their children through college, all on the earnings they made right here.
Things haven’t always been perfect here but things aren’t perfect anywhere. When I first started there was no matrix, there was no profit sharing. People just went to work and did their job and were thankful for the wages they received. When we first started receiving matrix checks people were THRILLED with $2. Now they aren’t happy unless it’s $8, and snub their noses @ 19% profit sharing checks. REALLY??????
I personally feel that many here have gotten so caught up in what they don’t have, or what they think they SHOULD have, that they don’t appreciate the many great things that they DO have. The company gives quite a bit of money to every employee here that they don’t HAVE TO GIVE. This includes, but is not limited to, matrix checks, profit sharing, lump sum 401K matches, tuition reimbursement, and stock options. NONE of these are required and ALL of these could be lost with the voting in of union representation. That’s a LOT to potentially lose without any gain.
Additionally, if an employee has a concern or problem, he or she can go to management and voice that concern and come to common ground. In less than 10 days we will vote to either KEEP that voice or give that voice to someone most will never even meet, let alone sit and hav a beer with. I am voting to keep my own voice and I sincerely hope each and every one of you join me in that decision.

      VOTE NO to UE!

On a side note the signs have been made and are onsite. There are 10 signs at the old mill and 10 at the FQM. Please contact me if you are intersted in wearing one of the signs for the purpose of having your picture taken while wearing the sign, or if you are interested in actively picketing the UE outside of any of the main gates.

  7. Mike Boyle (L-BAY) January 12, 2014 at 14:29 #

I am still amazed. no union supporters have come on and dispute anything that is said here. Or is the U.E. too scared to have them debate us and talk to us for fear they will lose a vote when they see the light.

To let everyone know the union reps are visiting homes. Unfortunately I was not home when Ashaki Binta (U E field organizer) came to visit. Wow she and her fellow organizers better have there facts straight when they come a knockin on the Boyle’s door!!!

  8. Chris Gallagher January 10, 2014 at 13:14 #

I have T-shirts and stickers also handbills if you need them , stop by line shop and pick them up !!

I hear a lot of rhetoric from Union supporters on what the union can and will do for me ,, all of that sounds well and dandy But I NEVER hear what the UE has DONE for their current members . If you do good things and are proud of them then you brag on your accomplishments

What have they actually done , where’s the examples of accomplishments ? it’s like a resume when your applying for a job You list your accomplishments

The UE is applying for a job , they want us to hire them
    The Accomplishments section is BLANK

First of all I want to than all of you for your comments they are pretty much all right on. It blows my mind that we are even talking about this union BS. I am counting on all of you to get the word out and VOTE NO!

Our company is not perfect but I am treated with respect each and every day I walk through that gate. I have a voice and I can talk freely to my supervisor any given day. This is by far the best company I have ever worked for. I am highly compensated for the job I do. I have worked for both union and non union companies and if anyone even believes we would be better with a union they need drug tested. Look around the valley you are NOT going to find a better job. Drive by Packard, RG-Steel and Lordstown look at the massive VACANT parking lots where did the employees go? Some of you are here at Vallourec please don’t let the UE screw this place up.

We have too much to loose if a union gets voted in. I am voting NO! The way I see it with the matrix, year end bonus, and 401K match that’s worth at least $25,000 a year. I am not willing to take a trip to Vegas put $25,000 on the table and give the UE one chance to roll the dice and come up with SNAKE EYES are you? Take a minute and think about what we have to loose, I am both blessed and PROUD to be a Vallourec employee.

I’ve been in two unions, and have also been on strike. No fun!! I know what a union can and CANNOT do for me. I’ve talked with people at GM, Severstal (WCI) and other unionized facilities and they shit their pants when I tell them about what we have here. It’s not perfect but a union is NOT going to make it perfect either. WE have built this place up by working together and this is dividing us. I don’t like it. In all Look at what we have here, it’s pretty dam good here. Count your BLESSINGS.

  12. Bryan January 9, 2014 at 10:10 #

VOTE NO!! I’ve yet to hear how this union can benefit me or any guy who has more than a few years in. The only thing I know for sure is if you vote yes, then you just added a 40-50$ a month bill to your bills. VOTE NO!!

I was thrilled and very thankful to be hired here in 2012. In 2013 I made the money in 9 months most people around this area would call a blessing. Most of us either worked here as contractors or came here to better ourselves with better pay, insurance etc. Don’t forget that! This company throws money at us hand over fist matrix, profit sharing, not to mention the lump sum to are 401’s at the end of the year not sure what other company can match that. Don’t let a few people’s bad attitudes affect your own thoughts and feelings. Take pride in your job and the company you work for Its a good one. Vote No!

I have read every comment on here and I must say that I agree with everyone. I too have worked unionized shops totaling nearly nine years. In those shops we had our most undesirable and unproductive employees spearheading the union’s cause. They were more concerned with personal gain than the welfare of the whole. This is exactly what we are experiencing at our own facility. The UE is preying upon the ignorance of our veteran employees and amplifying the severity of the minor issues we currently face. This is a classic tactic that is used by ALL unions to win votes. Most employees don’t realize the negative impact that a union can have on a workforce. While the union will tell you that they will support you if you vote them in, they actually have a much more malicious intent in mind. Basically, in order to sift through the bullshit that any union will tell you, just ask yourself and the union a few questions.

Do I need someone to speak for me?

Do I want undesirable and untrustworthy employees making decisions for me?

Am I willing to invest my hard earned money into something uncertain?

Am I willing to give up what I currently have and take a chance on never getting it back?

Why is this union a private union and not affiliated?

Why does this union have a bad track record?

What happened to all of the GE employees that the UE was supposedly “protecting”?

The fact is, we already have job security and protection. The protection and security that most of these people want are not realizing that it is “earned” not entitled. I am proud to work with some of the most dedicated and driven employees I have ever met at Vallourec. If you look at the group of us who are standing up and speaking out against this union you can find that we all carry the same attitude, work ethic, and drive to succeed. If you want the same security and protection that you feel you are not getting, try to step up to plate and show some initiative. Show that you are trying to help our company succeed and you will feel the same security that we do. You get paid well to do a job and you should feel fortunate to even have a job. If you want a union, go get a job at a union shop. Every one of us has complaints sometimes including myself but it is the ability to suck it up and keep pushing forward that separates us. I don’t want a damn union in our shop.I have always been able to speak up for myself and I will continue to do just that. Stand up and speak out with your vote!! VOTE NO!!!

  17. Heath Dillon January 7, 2014 at 18:51 #

Ive been with Vallourec for about 3 years now. Im not going to bash the union. In their day the union did have its purpose it was needed at one time. Because of the unions we have a lot today, but that was then and this is now. It stood its purpose and im grateful for the what the unions did. Now there are very limited reasons to have a union. At Vallourec I do not see where it is needed. The complaints people do have for wanting a union are not negotiated items; attendance policy, scheduling, team leaders, hr reps, and etc. The negotiated items will be our pay, our benefits, pto days, vacation days, and our VOICE. Im not willing to bargain those away for nothing. I came from a union shop and I make more on less hours and have more paid days off in my 3 years than I did in all of my 10 years in unions. That is why im proud to work at Vallourec and why im proud to vote NO!

I have a great job. I also have a wife and two young sons. Thanks to my good job and good benefits (zero dollars out of pocket for an $8,300 surgery my son recently had) and plenty of vacation time (who else gets 5 weeks a year?), we live a comfortable life and my boys don’t want for anything. This is very similar to the childhood I had, but that all came to a screeching halt one day, thanks to the union’s bad advice and empty promises at my dad’s workplace, which moved to Mexico shortly after the employees fell for the union’s BS. I remember what that felt like when my parents struggled. I also worked in a union shop before V&M and I was glad it went out of business because I didn’t agree with all the BS that went on (frivolous grievances and lazy people wanting free money for no work done.) Yes, there are some things that need changed, but no workplace is perfect and this is the best job I ever had.

This union drive has done personal harm to me already. Men who I thought were my friends have become quite upset because I refused to sign a union card. Because I don’t want our product to have a MADE IN MEXICO stamp on it, please vote NO for UE!

    • Anthony January 7, 2014 at 19:35 #

That pretty much hits the nail on the head.

  19. Chris Jolly January 7, 2014 at 13:49 #

I have been here 2 years now and can say that this is truly a great job for this area and these times. We make good money not including the Matrix and yearly bonus. Good vacation and PTO and a nice schedule.

I worked 10 years with a union and gained nothing but a hard time. I had pretty much the same insurance I have now and same amount of vacation and PTO. On the same note I was laid off 4 times and had to move once. The only people that benefited from the union were the ones that showed up late all the time, called off all the time, caught sleeping all the time, drunks and those that did drugs. These people were all backed by the union. If you show up here for work, take pride in your work and stay off drugs you will have the best job security that anyone can be guaranteed.

I know I am not voting yes on something so uncertain with such a weak union with no money!

I will keep my money and my own voice thank you!

According to Labor Organization Annual Report filed Sept,29 2013 by the EU International
The 36,000 members contributed $ 5,678,201 in dues and other fund raising activities ,
    listed under Total receipts.
    Under Cash Disbursements
    Representational Activities sch 15 $ 1,959,000
    Political Activities and
    Lobbying sch 16 $ 258,081

    Contributions, Gifts and
    Grants sch 17 $ 0

    General Overhead sch 18 $ 729,655

    Union Administration sch 19 $ 608,688

    Benefits ( Elected Reps ) sch 20 $ 1,699,871

    Per Capita Tax $ 0
    Strike Benefits $ 0
    Fees, fines, Assessment’s $ 0
    Supplies for Resale $ 2,802
    Purchase of Investments
    Fixed Assets $ 0
    Loans Made $ 26,324

    on Their Behalf $ 0
On Behalf of Individual Members $ 0
    Direct Taxes $ 187,543

    Subtotal $ 5,471,964

So one can conclude from the financial documents filed that NOT 1 cent went to the members for anything of the Dues collected, surely the 800 + members on strike in Erie Pa. could use a little help. Majority of the monies went for Union Organizers, Union Intl. Reps and staff salary, along with $ 1,212,726 for their Health, Life $ Benefit fund
Their $ 70,591 Dental Benefit package
Their $ 41,717 PBGC Premium for UE staff Employee Pension Plan
Their $ 357,432 UE staff Employee Pension Plan Contribution held by PNC Bank Trust
Airline tickets, Hotels , Rental cars, Cell phones etc.,,

All the above numbers and expenses are taken directly from the EU most current Financial filing of Sept. 2013

Guess with all these expenses and G.E. no longer supporting a large chunk of their expensive lifestyle they are in need of a new SUGAR DADDY . Don’t allow Vallourec to be that new SUGAR DADDY at OUR expense. Life may not be perfect , but it is pretty Good.

I’ve been working there since high school several years as a contractor, and as an employee for nearly 4 years with a combined total of about 10 years there has never been any reason for a Union to be brought In they have always treated me personally with respect great pay and benefits I think its very important to get the no votes rolling in remember if you don’t vote its the same as a yes vote, so let’s make sure we put a stop to this nonsense, vote NO.

  23. Mike Boyle (L-BAY) January 6, 2014 at 18:10 #

Ok everyone is doing great. there are a lot of great comments and responses here. I encourage everyone to talk to people, challenge the union for what they really are.

Why are union supporters not on here disputing our comments and views. Its probably because we have the truth on our side. These so-called supporters have selfish reasons for wanting a union, and its not to make things better for everyone. We have it good, real good and some people have forgot this.

Keep spreading the word. Talk about this sight and lets stand strong on “Ejection day 2014”
Vote no Vote no Vote no.

  24. Pat Harmon January 6, 2014 at 11:12 #

If this is your first time visiting the website, I would encourage you to read through ALL of the comments posted by your co-workers. The comments are composed of many different perspectives and experiences, but they all arrive at one commonality – VOTE NO and that’s exactly what I’ll do when it’s my turn to vote. I’ve been with Vallourec for almost 3 years and it’s the very best job I’ve ever had and I don’t understand what is so bad that some people feel that we need a union to represent us. I am paid a very good wage and I am treated with respect. If I have a problem, I feel that I can talk to my superiors and they will address the issue if it truly is an issue. If things were so bad around here, everyone would be standing in line to support the union, but they’re not. Some people want job security, but you will never obtain that by voting in a union. Job security comes from showing up to work on time, every day and maintaining a good attitude. NO ONE, wants to work with someone who is mad all the time and complains about how the company is screwing them or how they’re being picked on. It also comes from performing a quality job, EVERY TIME! These are the factors that we can control. The other factors, such as the economy and prevailing business conditions, are pretty much out of our hands and a union would only complicate them more than they naturally are. If you truly feel that you need a union, maybe you should look at your own situation and try to address that. I do agree that certain situations could be better for some people, but I am content and thankful for what I have and I believe that most people are as well. If you want more, then you need to contribute more. When it’s a down day or an outage, you’re supposed to be tired at the end of the day. THAT’S HOW IT WORKS! These are the times that you give everything that you can to get the mill into the best condition as possible. When we’re running, get out in the mill regularly and keep an eye on your equipment and try to prevent problems before they happen. TAKE OWNERSHIP! If everyone would do this, I believe we’d have a good matrix every month. I feel that there is a lot of potential here for anyone that wants to pursue it and put in the efforts required to achieve their individual goals. If you don’t feel this way, then maybe you need to define your own set of goals so that you know why the hell you get up and come to work every day. You have to know what you’re fighting for. It’s what drives us to succeed, holds us accountable for our actions and helps us to become the best versions of ourselves. THE UNION WILL DO NONE OF THIS FOR YOU! It’s all up to you. PLEASE make the effort to come out and vote NO on January 21st, 22nd & 23rd.

    • Anthony January 6, 2014 at 14:06 #

  25. Steel Worker January 6, 2014 at 05:20 #

People need to realize that a union isn’t a magic wand that will change everything with one motion. It is give and take and the chance that we can lose more than we can gain is to great to risk. I enjoy the Hell our of my job and don’t want to see it ruined. This is the best job I’ve ever had and the most $ I’ve ever made. Is it perfect? No, neither were any of my past jobs and yes some of them were union. Didn’t like them then, don’t like them now. No job is perfect but Vallouric is by far the best job I’ve ever had and I do not want a Union to ruin it. A union will destroy this mill, Mark my words.

I DONT KNOW SOME OF YOU WHO HAVE POSTED A COMMENT,BUT AM HAPPY TO BE WORKING WITH ALOT OF SMART PEOPLE WHO THINK THE WAY I DO.WE ARE NOT WEAK MINDED,AND WONT LET ANYBODY SPEAK FOR US OTHER THAN OURSELVES.SOME OF THEM DONT EVEN KNOW THAT THE UNION COULD GET AHOLD OF OUR 401K,AND PENSION.I SAY DONT GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO GET ANYTHING.NEVER NEEDED THEM HERE IN THE PAST,AND DONT NEED THEM NOW. VOTE NO

  27. Contractor January 4, 2014 at 04:05 #

I am a Contractor that works in the mill full time and I love what I do. I have read the flyers both from you guys and from the union. Even though I do not have a vote I do have a voice and have been known to be outspoken from time to time.
The main thing about the union’s flyers that caught my attention was ” They claim that the contractor’s would be hired in by Vallourec ” I HAVE NEVER SEEN A UNION THAT WAS IN CHARGE OF THE HIRING. so therefore they have been caught in a lie right there. I SAY NO TO UNION AND LETS ALL GO TO WORK LIKE WE ALWAYS DO.

  28. contractor January 3, 2014 at 20:19 #

this union tries claiming that all contractors would be hired in by Vallourec. I honestly never knew that a union could do the hiring for a company lol. As great as that sounds it is to good to be true so even though I don’t get a voice at the vote I do still have a voice and I say HELL NO

  29. Heat Treat (FQM) January 3, 2014 at 17:33 #

The union can legally, and they WILL, promise you the world! But they can promise NOTHING. When they are flapping about what they will do for you, simply ask them to put that in writing. You’ll get nothing more than a blank dull stare!

What will the UE bring to the bargaining table? NOTHING! They have nothing. The company holds all the cards. When the UE ask for something, they will need to give up something. That’s how collective bargaining works. Ask yourself – what are YOU willing to give up? Lower wage? Higher benefit costs, NO matrix, smaller annual bonuses? They are all in great jeopardy. Anyone that thinks we will get everything we have now PLUS MORE is living in a fantasy world.

Are there things I would like to see changed at Vallourec? Are there things I disagree with? Sure. But overall I am very happy working here and I enjoy what I do. I was out of work when this opportunity presented itself. Believe me, I am grateful for the job I have! The people I work with are good people. We can work through any issues with our leads and supervisors ourselves. I have NEVER been treated unfairly or disrespectfully. It simply IS a great place to work.

Finally, I have seen the people who are spear-heading the union movement. I even know some of them. Let me tell you right now, these people could care less about me, my career, or you. They are in this for alternative reasons and I do not need, or trust any of them. I can and will represent myself, thank you!

You MUST vote! Especially if you are a NO vote! Don’t let anyone tell you differently!

    VOTE NO!!

I was in a maintenance job at the old (LTV, Wci, RG Steel Co. ) I came to VM thinking I could get away from the Union . Remember the strike of 1995 when the Union came to the homes of those who would not participate in the “Jack rocks” making and distribution of same at the supervisors homes and those of us from the Union who would not participate. The warren police would stay outside the gates drinking coffee and eating donuts, watching the strikers break headlights of the trucks carrying out the coils trying to keep the company going.(The warren police were also Union employees). It was the International Union which caused RG to finally go under.. You can check this out with some of the peon union folks at the former RG. So now any of our children can no longer work at a formerly good company because of the leaches of the Intl Union. Even now Obama is forgetting those who once voted for him! So now I having been fortunate to come to VM, don’t make VM like the former Co. I once worked for..

  31. Operator January 3, 2014 at 11:11 #

There is absolutely 100% no need for a union at Vallourec. I make more than enough and not once have I ever been disrespected by management. I worked at UPS for 10 years on both sides and I saw first hand how the union is destroying the company from the inside out. I know shop stewards that are tired of being represented by their own union and want out! We are all better off without a union at Vallourec. Vote NO!

  32. 26 YEAR EMPLOYEE January 3, 2014 at 04:37 #

I HAVE BEEN AN EMPLOYEE FOR 26 YEARS NEVER HAVE I HAD TO GO HOME AND TELL MY FAMILY I AM OUT OF WORK, LAID OFF OR ON STRIKE I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO BETTER POSITIONS AND COME TO WORK TO DO A JOB IF I HAVE A COMPLAINT I GO TO MY BOSS WE ME AGREE TO DISAGREE BUT WE ALWAYS COMEE TO COMMON GROUND YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THIS AGAIN WITH A UNION SO VOTE NO IN JAN. 21-23.

  33. m. wilkes January 2, 2014 at 19:45 #

I work in a union steel mill and take it from me the union workers ( well the ones that follow attendence policies and everyday safety rules) feel the ssme way. They pay for nothing. The union will do nothing for the hard workin emploee that takes pride in their work. They have done nothing but road block expansion at our plant by unrealistic demands. We are building a 2 billion dollar expandion and it went elseware.Do yourselves a great favor n vote no.

  34. Chris Gallagher January 2, 2014 at 15:10 #

There use to be a time and a place for good unions to protect employees from bad working environments this is not the time nor place, I am not anti-union…, far from it. I grew up in pgh.pa very strong union area, worked at J&L , Crucible steel. Worked at Sharon tube USWA 1355. Vallourec Star is by far the best job I have ever had.. I
enjoy the relationship I have with this company, I am well compensated for my work. I have job security and opportunities. I don’t need to pay someone to speak for me, being a grown man I can do that myself. I have seen to many union shops expediate the demise of so many company’s. The EU is not my fathers union or our Grandfathers, those unions fought for what we now have so enjoy the fruits of their labors and vote NO for the EU. REMEMBER a private organization is a for PROFIT organization

  35. Twenty- Six and Counting January 2, 2014 at 07:27 #

Like many Veteran employees here I have:Twenty-Six years with this company “and Counting” :

And here is how I “count those years.

    1) One lay-off in all that time

    2) Never had to sell my car, or House and move my kids to a different school district ! (like so many people across this country and here in the Valley)

    3) New Owners invested nearly a Billion Dollars right back into the community and created Hundreds of new jobs for valley residents. ( They could have put this plant anywhere in the world)

    4) A very secure “Union Free” history of Twenty seven years in the community with way above average pay and benefits.

    5) Five previous elections – All turned AWAY !!!

I would like to see my ( and many of my coworkers) streak of 26 years and “counting, continue, I would like to see all the new employees be able to say the same thing in 26 years. I would like to leave a “Union Free” and secure future for all the younger guys here at Vallourec !
Don’t let this small group of unhappy employees put our families future at risk. !!

Make it the Sixth and FINAL TIME that a Union shows up at our door and disrupts our business and divides our workforce !!!! They Dont have “ANY SKIN IN THIS GAME ” WE DO !!!!
VOTE NO !!!!! —– VOTE NO !!!!!!! VOTE NO !!!!!!!

  36. millwright December 31, 2013 at 11:46 #

I have worked for vallourec for almost two years, it is the best place I have worked and the most money I have made. The bonuses we get is free money for going to work and doing a great job. We will end up loosing all of that if the union gets voted in, above and beyond the money i came to vallourec for job security for myself and family I’ve been laid off before and personally don’t want to be ever again, if it continues the way it’s going there is no reason we all can’t retire from here. It’s not perfect but is getting alot better with time, everything does, but there isn’t anyplace that is perfect to work for.

  37. PMSM December 31, 2013 at 01:30 #

These aren’t the easiest of times in this country, for most of us I’m sure this job provides the most financial support in our families at home. This is by far one of if not the best places to work in the entire area for the trade were in and employment in general period. And the company just keeps investing money into this place. Why take the risk of starting over with the UE which most of us have never heard of till this year? Unions are expensive and bad for business it’s no secret. A world class operation like us at RG steel in warren closed down and have been on and off work for what seems the like the last decade. The most profitable market for GE is their transportation facility where they make locomotives in Erie Pa reported record earnings in 2012 of 5.6 billion and record profits of 1.03 billion but is laying off 950 UE represented workers and taking the orders to a NONunion facility in Fort Worth Texas. GE executive on the layoffs is quoted “Cost is becoming more and more of a factor, we’ve got to match are competition”. If can happen there it can happen here unions are bad for our future Vote NO!

  38. Employee December 30, 2013 at 20:59 #

I’ve been employed at Vallourec for several years now and can honestly say I love my job. I have worked bad jobs in my life and this is clearly not one of them. In fact it’s not a job, but a fulfilling career. The only one holding you back from advancing in this company is yourself. They even offer college tuition reimbursment. I don’t understand why anyone who works for this company feels they need to pay a union to represent us. In fact I feel they are being downright ungrateful. This job is the best in the area. I challenge anyone to name one better. We have great benefits in a time where a lot of the country is losing theirs. They provide us with monthly and yearly bonuses. Not just hundreds, but thousands of dollars a year. They give us stocks and also options to buy more at a reduced price. They match on our 401k. Most of the employees make upwards of 80,000 to 100,000 dollars a year with no college eduaction. We have nice cars, nice houses, and put our kids through college all with fun money left over. What more could anyone want???? Even if the union comes in and bargains for exactly what we have now we are still going to lose money because of union dues. Even the mangement is pretty decent compared to past jobs I’ve had. Every place is going to have its minor issues, when they become major then maybe people will have something to complain about. Like others on here have said if you don’t like your jobs go to a union shop and leave us alone.

  39. Chad Carpec December 30, 2013 at 09:40 #

Why do we need a union? Representation or to have a voice! What are you being represented for? Why do you need people who don’t know you to speak for you? I don’t believe there are any situations in which you can’t man up and go to your TL’s or your GM’s and talk about a work related or personal problem. I have had representation from a union in the past. They aren’t in it for the worker. They are in it for personal gain. Every union president I had at Sharon tube company cut deals to hold a management position within the company. We at Sharon tube were hours from a lockout negotiating about .25 cent raises. I had guys there that have been through strikes and hardships brought on by the union. Talking about bringing ball bats and breaking peoples knee caps if they cross the strike line. Why do we need to bring an already not needed drama to a great place to work in Vallourec. A Union is greed and Will shut down another prominent steel mill. If you have pride in what you do and where you work, then there is no need for representation. You already represent yourself as a good honest hard working American man or woman. Vote No! Stay strong among ourselves.

  40. Wife of a Steel Worker December 29, 2013 at 20:17 #

I grew up in a family that made it’s money by working for a unionized steel mill. My father worked in a unionized mill since a very young age and had seen the company through many aspects of change in his career. He eventually became the union president for the mill where he worked. My husband now works for vallourec, which is not unionized, as of this point. I am very aware of how a union steel mill operates. My father was laid off regularly, had to file for unemployment multiple times. In fact, at times he had to do side jobs justs to make ends meet. Now in your current situation, your mill treats you fairly, you get vacations, bonuses, good healthcare, a safe work environment and to my knowledge no mandatory lay offs.
I believe that I have an inside look to your situation. I’ve seen both sides of the card. My husband is treated better, paid better and more fairly than my father ever was, in a union mill. In his time as president, he wasn’t able to provide the things that your mill offers to you, it’s employees,as a non-unionized mill. Why try to fix something that isn’t broken?? My father even said that to unionize your mill isn’t a good idea. Mind you, this coming from a former union president himself.
My father said that he fought hard to try to provide a better workplace for the employees at his mill. In candid conversation, now that he is retired, he has said that the union will only protect the people who don’t want to do their job. He said they are not there for the good employees.

  41. Anthony December 29, 2013 at 19:53 #

I hear a lot of talk from the UE about the positive’s and the potential gains of getting union representation. But no talk of the negatives and possible losses of union representation. I go to work everyday and work in a safe environment make a good living and don’t need representation. I feel the negatives won’t surface until its too late. The UE is based out of Pittsburg Pa. a town that has been crippled by unionized steel mills. Now the UE is trying to unionize the sole surviving steel mill in youngstown ohio another town that has been crippled by unionized steel mills how could that possibly be good.

      AMEN brotha.

  43. Mike Boyle (L-Bay) December 27, 2013 at 21:08 #

I would like to encourage people on here to print out the flyer and the flyers that will come in the future, and distribute them in your locker rooms, break rooms, or parking lots. Today I made 100 copies and have started passing them around. We need help in getting our message out.

Try to remember this isn’t about an employee. Its about the union U. E. ,and man the more I read and learn about them, they seem to be a weak and poor union. Certainly not what a proud Vallourec Worker/Employee is in need of. Our company is always demanding quality and safety, should we not expect the same?

U.E. doesn’t seem to possess either for us.

I would like to hear from people in support of the “UNION” What kind of upgrade can they promise me. I can not think of any company around the Mahoning Valley that can offer more, and treat their employees better than Vallourec Star!

  44. brent nelson (caster) December 27, 2013 at 16:52 #

I go to work everyday. I am happy with what I do. I am happy with the money I make. I feel I am treated fairly. What can the U.E. do for me? Having worked as a union employee in the past I can honestly answer that question with one word. Nothing. Other than take my money that I went to work for in the first place. The union facility that I was employed at previously did lay me off about every two years as well as promise the same things that the U.E. is promising….. good luck. Also when contracts are over and the negotiations begin again, its not fun worrying if you are going to have a job when you get there. That is the reason why I came to Vallourec. Now we have to vote to keep them out… come on. My vote will be in the NO box. I hope people talk with some one with a little bit of back round and don’t listen to the empty promises.

    • Mike Boyle (L-Bay) December 30, 2013 at 19:19 #

Hey Brent, I really like your post. How many more in the caster feel the way you do? I know over here at L-Bay about 90% are voting NO.

If there is anything I can do to help spread the word over there, let me know. If you want to pass out flyers we have some printed.

Also please encourage people to get on here and tell their story, like you did. You never know if it will help someone make the RIGHT decision to vote NO.

    • Brent nelson January 2, 2014 at 18:23 #

Thanks…..I would say the caster is 90 % or more no votes….let’s hope other departments are the same.

  45. GonZo December 27, 2013 at 16:19 #

What is society coming it sickens me to the lowest pit of my gut when I think about paying some fat rat B@$t@r! my hard earned $$$$ so I can come to work and do my job what happened to this country I remember back when we got payed to come to work and not the other way around (land of the free free to the people in uniforms)

  46. GonZo December 27, 2013 at 15:57 #

The older generation of Vallourec and those alike you need to awake from this slumber of indolence and harken to the call of the future of Vallourec do u not see that we are a doomed company if we get a union do you not relies that the fate of are company and current generation and generations to come rest on are shoulders on the days of election the time is comeing for us to dispense with the frivolous pleasures of childhood and get down to honest toil until you’re 65 then and only then can you sit back relax and live happily ever after till the day you die we can not sit back n watch a bunch of degenerate swines take control of are vallourific company you want a union job go get one some where ealse or can you not go forth into you’re grim slide of glory with out Vallourec!!!!

  47. Polo December 27, 2013 at 09:01 #

A union rep lol told me he wanted a union cuz of seniority lmao he. Retiring n 6yr he said he give up his matrix wht a joke 25-30 grand for seniority n u got 27yrs in wht is ur worry if u want a union u better off emailing me at demarco27@gmail.com

  48. anotherMike December 27, 2013 at 03:26 #

The scariest thing to me is the “leaders” of this thing! i personally would NOT want any of them “representing me”. If i need to talk to my supervisor, I don’t want one of those guys sitting in and knowing all my business.
I, for one, can speak for MYSELF.

If your not happy here, go work in a Union steel plan. Oh yeah, they all went out of business!

    • Jim January 5, 2014 at 11:25 #

I agree, I’m a 25 year employee and I have never needed a union. I feel secure and that will go away with a union. These organizers I see are wanting or needing a union for the wrong reasons.

  49. Mike Boyle (L-Bay) December 26, 2013 at 20:19 #

Here’s a very interesting fact that came to my attention about this union that wants to “represent” us

    http://www.nrtw.org/en/press/2013/01/union-officials-and-ikea-charged-kee

January 30th, 2004 On January 30, 2004, in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, Joseph Danik, former financial secretary of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 121, was sentenced to three years probation for embezzling $6,194 in union funds. Danik was ordered to pay restitution, in addition to undergoing alcohol, gambling and mental health treatment. The sentencing follows an investigation by the OLMS Washington District Office.

HMMMM …… seems those union dues were well spent! what do you think?

  50. Mike Boyle (L-Bay) December 26, 2013 at 20:10 #

I would just like to say that everyone Needs to vote. In this situation YOUR vote does count, Not voting is like voting yes for this union. We need everyone here to get the word out. TAKE A STAND! This union claims “one voice”. Sure theirs!!! Lets show them that we already have a voice, and let it be heard on January 21, 22 and 23rd.Vote NO… NO…NO! .
